Save web pages to Outline

Here is how to save a web page into your self-hosted Outline with OutClip: create a token, install the extension, connect, save. Everything stays between your browser and your server.

What you need

  • A self-hosted Outline. Tested against Outline 1.7.1, 1.10.1 and 1.12.0; anything in between should work.
  • Chrome or Firefox.

1. Create an API token: Settings → API Keys

Open your Outline and go to Settings → API Keys → New API key. Give it a name, for example “OutClip”, and copy the token. OutClip keeps it only in your browser.

2. Install OutClip: Chrome or Firefox

Install OutClip from the Chrome Web Store or from Firefox Add-ons. The browser does not ask for access to websites during installation.

3. Connect: address and token, nothing else

Open OutClip's settings. Enter the address of your Outline as you use it in the browser, without a path (https://wiki.example.com), and the token. Press “Connect and save”. Now the browser asks whether OutClip may access exactly this address. The permission applies to that address only.

4. Save your first page: preview, then one click

Open the page you want to save and click the OutClip icon or press Ctrl+Shift+O (Mac: Cmd+Shift+O). The popup shows the title and the text as Markdown before you send anything. “Save to Outline” creates the document, “Open in Outline” jumps straight to it.

OutClip copies images as attachments into your Outline. Whatever your server cannot reach stays a link to the original page.

5. Pick a collection: from your real Outline tree

Under “Collection” you find the collections of your Outline, under “Nest under (optional)” a document inside it. OutClip reads both straight from your server; nothing is preset.

6. Append to a document: no licence needed

Instead of “New document” choose “Append to a document”. Find the target under “Recently used”, in the collection tree, or with “Search by title”. The page lands at the bottom of the document, below a divider.

If something goes wrong

  • “Outline rejected the API token”: create a new one under Settings → API Keys and enter it.
  • “Access to your Outline server was not granted”: open the settings and press “Connect and save” again.
  • The address is wrong: no path, exactly as you open Outline in the browser.
  • Otherwise: write to me (page in German).
