Save web pages to your self-hosted Outline

I could not find a good way to save a web page into my own Outline, so I built OutClip: a browser extension that saves the page you are reading as clean Markdown, with the full text and its images. It talks only to your Outline server.

The problem: a saved page that falls apart

Copying and pasting an article into Outline loses most of what made it readable: the images stay links to the original site, navigation and ads come along, and a year later the page has moved and your note is a column of broken boxes. Clippers built for other tools solve this for their own service, not for yours, and many of them send the page through a server you do not control.

What OutClip does instead

  • Full text, not fragments. It extracts the article with Defuddle, the library behind the official Obsidian Web Clipper, and leaves navigation, ads and comments behind.
  • Images become yours. Your Outline server fetches each image itself and keeps its own copy. Whatever it cannot reach stays a link to the source.
  • You choose where it lands. Collection and parent document come from your real Outline tree, or you append the clip to an existing document.
  • You see it before it is saved. Fix the title, trim the Markdown, then send it.
  • Your data goes to your server. Pages and your API token go only to the Outline address you enter. There is no vendor server and no analytics. The one exception: if you enter a licence key, it is checked with the seller, Polar. No page content goes there.
The OutClip popup shows the page as Markdown before it is saved to Outline

Three steps

  1. Create an API token in Outline under Settings → API Keys.
  2. Install OutClip and enter your Outline address and the token. The browser then asks for access to exactly that address.
  3. Open a page and save it: click the OutClip icon or press Ctrl+Shift+O (Mac: Cmd+Shift+O), check the preview, press “Save to Outline”.

The full walkthrough with pictures is in the OutClip guide.

What it costs

Clipping text and images, choosing the target and appending to a document are free. An optional licence (€7.99 / $8.99, one-time, no subscription) adds a scrolled picture of the page (up to twenty screen heights), recipe documents, multiple Outline servers and rules per site. Questions

Which Outline versions does it work with?

I tested OutClip against self-hosted Outline 1.7.1, 1.10.1 and 1.12.0; anything in between should work. It needs an API token from Settings → API Keys.

Does it work with Outline Cloud?

I have not tested it with Outline Cloud, so I do not promise it. OutClip is built and tested for self-hosted Outline.

Which browsers?

Chrome and Firefox. There is no Safari version.

Where do my pages and my token go?

To the Outline address you entered, over HTTPS (plain http:// only for localhost on your own machine). Nowhere else. You can verify this in your browser's network tab.

Are there limits on images?

Outline limits image imports to about 25 per minute, so large pages take correspondingly longer. The popup tells you beforehand.

Is it open source?

No. The source code is not public. Documentation, release notes and bug reports are on GitHub. I built it myself, with AI assistance (Claude).
